CARLSBAD, CA., June 19, 2000 – Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY) Staff Professional Annika Sorenstam eagled the first playoff hole to defeat Karrie Webb at the LPGA Evian Masters in France on Saturday. Sorenstam won an LPGA Tour-record $270,000 for her third victory of the season and the 21st of her illustrious career.

Sorenstam - who met the performance qualifications for entry into the LPGA Hall of Fame with her victory at the Welch’s/Circle K Championship in March - and Webb finished regulation play at 12-under par, establishing a new scoring record for the Evian Masters. The sudden death playoff was contested on the par-5 18th hole, which both players had just birdied at the end of regulation play. After a solid drive, Sorenstam’s 7-iron approach shot from 172 yards stopped five feet from the pin. She holed the putt for eagle, moving to second on the LPGA Tour money list for the season.

“This win is definitely in my all-time top five,” said Sorenstam, who will play in this weekend’s McDonald’s LPGA Championship. “I worked hard over the winter to get back on track. It has started to pay off, and this week shows it.”

Sorenstam used 11 Callaway Golf® clubs in her latest victory, including a Callaway Golf titanium driver, Steelhead Plus™ 3-wood and 7-wood, Steelhead™ X-14™ Irons and an Odyssey® White Hot™ 2 Putter. Sorenstam also used the Callaway Golf “Rule 35™” Firmfeel™ ball.

Sorenstam wasn’t the only Callaway Golf Staff Professional to play well at the Evian Masters. Alison Nicholas finished tied for fifth using 11 Callaway Golf clubs, including an ERC™ Forged Titanium Driver, Big Bertha® Steelhead Fairway Woods, Hawk Eye™ Tungsten Injected Titanium Irons and an Odyssey White Hot 1 Putter. Nicholas also used the Callaway Golf “Rule 35” Softfeel™ ball. In all, eight of the top 10 finishers at the event used drivers made by Callaway Golf, while five of the top 10 finishers used the Callaway Golf “Rule 35” ball.

Meanwhile, the winner of last weekend’s SBC Championship used a Callaway Golf titanium driver and two Steelhead Plus Fairway Woods to claim his second Senior PGA Tour title of the year. Nine of the top 10 finishers at the event relied on fairway woods made by Callaway Golf, while four of the top 10 finishers used the Callaway Golf “Rule 35” ball.
